Welcome to the first Gut Talk by the Gut Perspective! Here, we’re going to be talking about all things GUT — and what better way to start than with some basics? What is the gut? What is the microbiome? What is bacteria? And why do we even need to talk about these things? I’ll do my best to answer these questions and hope you’ll follow along on this journey of gut exploration.
My aim is to empower people to learn as much as they can about their gut health and the beautiful ecosystem thriving inside us. Right now, as you read this, there’s a thriving city inside you — but it’s not made of bricks, glass, or roads. It’s made of
trillions of microscopic residents. They don’t speak your language, but they shape your mood, digestion, immunity, and even the way you think. They’ve been with you since the moment you were born, and they’ll be with you until your last breath. This is your gut microbiome — a hidden community of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other tiny organisms that together weigh more than your brain.
All our lives, we’ve been taught to fear bacteria. Sanitize. Sterilize. Kill the germs. But what if the most important thing for your health… was actually made up of bacteria? Understanding this life within you isn’t just a biology lesson — it’s the key to unlocking better health from the inside out. So let’s zoom in, peel back the layers, and meet the most important neighbours you’ll ever have. Before we dive in, let’s define some important terms.
Microbes are tiny living organisms that you can’t see without a microscope.
Bacteria, fungi, and viruses are different kinds of microbes, all of which live in our gut.
Microbiota refers to the population of microbes living in a specific area (in our context — the gut).
Microbiome is the entire ecosystem — like the city where all these microbial citizens live.
Gut refers to the entire digestive tract, from mouth to colon.
The Glorious Gut
Many of the foods we eat contain compounds our bodies simply can’t break down on their own. That’s where our gut microbes step in as the real MVPs. They ferment certain fibers into short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) — tiny but mighty molecules that are like gold for your gut. SCFAs help nourish and protect your gut lining, and when that lining is compromised, it can open the door to a host of issues: SIBO, IBS, infections, and the most insidious troublemaker of them all — chronic inflammation.
About 70% of your immune system resides in your gut. In other words, there are more immune cells in your gut walls than in your blood circulation or bone marrow. This is connected to the enteric nervous system — often called the “second brain.” Microbes have the duty to educate this system to recognize real threats. Without this training, we’d all be more prone to allergies, infections, and autoimmune diseases.
And to top it all off — through the gut-brain axis, certain helpful microbes can influence mood, stress responses, and cognition. The gut is the largest facility for storing serotonin — a crucial chemical for vital functions like pain sensitivity, mood, sleep, appetite, and overall wellness.
Many people might wonder: if the gut’s only job is digestion — breaking down food, absorbing nutrients, and calling it a day — why would it house trillions of microbes, an entire immune army, and a constant chatter of chemical signals? Why would it be weighed down by all these responsibilities? The truth is, the question itself is flawed: the gut isn’t just about digestion!
When we were young, we learned about digestion the same way we learned about the respiratory or circulatory system — as a tidy, self-contained process. It all seemed pretty straightforward. But over the past few decades, science and curiosity have exploded, revealing invaluable insights about this so-called “digestive system.” When I first started digging into the research, I remember thinking, “Surely something as simple as digestion can’t possibly affect… well… everything?” But the deeper I went, the clearer it became — the gut isn’t just a food-processing tube. It’s a command center, a chemical factory, a security system, and a communication hub rolled into one. And what happens here can send ripples (or shockwaves) to every corner of the body, from your brain to your skin, your immune system to your mood.
A Pinch of Reality
That’s the gut in all its glory, but let’s be honest — that glory isn’t always the norm. Let’s talk about reality. Our bodies are home to both good bacteria (the peacekeepers) and bad bacteria (the troublemakers), and having both is completely normal — in fact, it’s essential. Many of these microbes are gifted to us at birth, passed from our mothers during delivery and breastfeeding. Others move in later — through the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe, the people we hug, the animals we cuddle, and even the soil we walk on. Over time, this diverse mix of microbes builds a unique microbial “fingerprint” that’s entirely our own.
The key isn’t eliminating the bad guys — it’s keeping the populations in balance so the peacekeepers stay in charge. And when this balance tips the wrong way, we call it dysbiosis. Think of it as too many troublemakers stirring chaos and not enough peacemakers keeping the peace.
As you read this sentence, right this second, an entire squad of good bacteria is working behind the scenes to keep the bad bacteria in check — making sure you don’t pay the price with your health. These bacteria are employed by our bodies to work 24/7, tirelessly protecting us from harm. To give them some sort of work-life balance, all they require is the right ratio of employees from both categories — meaning, enough good bacteria to keep the troublemakers in control.
And here’s the kicker — thanks to our modern habits and lifestyles, most of us are already living with some degree of dysbiosis. This imbalance has been linked to a list of problems we hear about all the time: excess weight gain, obesity, diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome, allergies, high blood pressure, and the list goes on.
The Magic Word
While it’s useful to know the science (after all, you’re literally living with these microbes), what really matters is knowing how to support your gut buddies. The problem? We’re swimming in a sea of food and nutrition noise — elimination diets, calorie counting, fat-to-protein ratios, carb tracking, endless cooking “rules.” Unfortunately, health has become more of a math problem, and in all that number-crunching, we’ve lost sight of the basics.
The truth: our gut evolved on plants. It thrives because of plants. Plants keep it — and us — alive. And no, this isn’t a call to ditch everything but fruits and veggies. When I say “plant foods,” I mean the whole spectrum — legumes, pulses, grains, beans, seeds, nuts, fruits, vegetables, anything that springs from the soil. These fiber-rich, nutrient-packed foods are the fuel our microbes rely on to do their life-saving work.
I’m not a fan of the word “solution,” because it’s never that simple. However, when it comes to matters of the gut — diversity can be a great place to start. Much like how diversity fuels nations, it fuels our microbes too. If I wanted to be bold, I’d tell you to aim for a 90% plant-diverse diet. But I also know how tricky it is to change eating habits — so let’s start with 70% and work our way up. This isn’t about becoming vegetarian or vegan; it’s about feeding your gut the variety it was designed to thrive on. And for my vegetarian friends — sorry, you’re not automatically in the clear. It’s not just about eating plants, it’s about which plants and in what balance we are consuming them. Too often these days, our plates are overloaded with refined carbs, hidden sugars, and additives that sneak in through packaged foods, quietly inducing dysbiosis.
I could go on for pages about this, but this gut talk is just a welcome into the world inside us. In future gut talks, we’ll unpack these concepts and dive deeper into the science with actionable steps we can actually put to use. Hopefully, these insights give you plenty of food for thought (pun fully intended).
